Dear Senior Citizens:I met with Senator A. G. Crowe to request that he draft legislation to protect our Senior Citizens from increased property taxes due to inflation. With his assistance and the help of the Louisiana Assessors’ Association our legislators proposed and the voters passed Constitutional Amendment #8.
Constitutional Amendment #8 was the most significant property tax amendment that has been approved since 1982 when the homestead exemption was increased to its current level, 7,500 ($75,000 fair market-value). This amendment will freeze the assessed value on homes owned by individuals 65 years or older (husband, wife, widow or widower). The combined adjusted gross income of the property owner for 2011 must not exceed $65,891.43. As inflation continues to increase the value of homes, the assessment cannot go up under Amendment #8, therefore, property tax bills for senior citizens cannot increase merely because property values have increased.
With property values rising so rapidly in St. Tammany Parish it is imperative that all Senior Citizens 65 years or older apply immediately for this special assessment level which became effective January 1, 2000.
You must apply for this special assessment value at our Covington office located at the St. Tammany Parish Justice Center, 701 North Columbia Street or at the Slidell office at 61134 North Military Rd., Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please bring with you proof of age and a copy of the 1st page of your Federal Income Tax return showing your combined adjusted gross income. If you are unable to come to the office, please call me and I will come to you.
I am proud to be your Assessor and I am here to serve you. If you should have any questions, please feel free to call me anytime. With kindest personal regards, I remain,
Very sincerely yours,
